The British Museum
Much is written about the Reading Room in the British Museum. You can click on the thumbnails below to view a few photographs taken by the editor. However, for our purposes, one important aspect of the Reading Room is the initial conditions, in this case the vision of an Italian political exile, Antonio Genesio Maria Panizzi. He worked his way up to become the Principal Librarian of the British Museum. He held this post from 1856 to 1866. Because of Panizzi's vision and ability, the Reading Room was reified. The Reading Room became the favourite haunt for a number of important political and literary figures. Karl Marx was a regular for thirty years. Vladimir Lenin, Oscar Wilde, Leon Trotsky, Rudyard Kipling, George Bernard Shaw, and Virginia Woolf all used this room. There is something about such places and their sublime encouragement for thinking. Please accept our invitation to use this website as your virtual reading room.
